Dave Gorman vs The Rest Of The World

Dave Gorman vs The Rest Of The World Cover

This was my fourth book.

It's about playing games. Remember when you were a kid, and you used to go round to a friend's house to see if they were playing? Well, as adults we're not supposed to do that. Which is a shame...because I likes playing. I really likes games.

So I knocked on the biggest door I could think of - the internet - and asked 76,000 people if they fancied a game. This is the story of what happened next.

I played some classics - Monopoly, Scrabble, dominoes and cribbage. I also played a load of games I'd never heard of before - Khet, Kubb, Tikal or Smite anyone? I played board games and physical games. I've thrown sticks, balls, frisbees and darts. I've rolled dice and I've drawn cards. From Exeter to Edinburgh and from Liverpool to Lewes I've travelled the length and breadth of Britain meeting strangers in strange places -- their homes, at work, in the back rooms of pubs -- and getting some, um, hardcore game action. From casual players to serious game geeks, from rank amateurs to world champions.

Of course I lost a few games but I won a few too. I also won a few friends.

It turns out we're a competitive lot, us Brits. Not that I was keeping score...

It's probably the gentlest of my books so far. Although... well... it feels like it is... but it isn't.

No winks were tiddled in the making of this book.
